Overcoming Selective Mutism

  • What is SM?

Selective Mutism, or SM, is an anxiety disorder that inhibits children from speaking in certain settings, even though they may be fully verbal in the home or other familiar settings.

  • Our Approach

PCIT-SM (Parent-Child Interaction Therapy, adapted for SM): We use the evidence-based approach of PCIT-SM to take a collaborative and individualized approach to therapy.

Caregivers and Adults: This includes equipping caregivers and involved adults skills to help children gradually decrease their anxiety and increase their ability to speak in all settings. Parent and teacher support and guidance are key components of the treatment plan. We empower parents and teachers with the tools to support their child’s progress at home.

Group and Individual: We offer both group and individual treatment for SM, depending on the need of each individual.
